Housing Resources
Facing Housing Challenges?
Know your rights!
Did you know there are housing rights that protect residents and their pets? It’s true! Our organization assembled a team, including an attorney, to bring you the following free resource as it relates to pet ownership and housing rights: “Assistance Animal Guide and FAQs“
Please note that while we are not providing you with legal services by sharing this document with you, we hope this will offer insight to you so you can pursue legal action if you are being discriminated against.
Pet-friendly rentals
Finding housing for you and your furry kids can be a challenge, especially if you own a breed that’s typically restricted. Below are some suggestions to help your landlord accept your pet:
Do a meet & greet
Offer to do a meet & greet introduction between your pets and the landlord. Seeing a pet in their environment with their family can ease a landlord’s worries.
- Have a plan for containment while you’re away to reduce behaviors such as chewing or destruction. Crate training can be very helpful.
- Create time in your schedule to exercise your pet and provide enrichment activities to reduce boredom or excess energy which can lead to unwanted behaviors.
- Assure your landlord that dogs can offer more security and help deter vandals or robbers.
Perform a DNA test
Perform a DNA test so you have proof of percentages of breeds. Sometimes your dog won’t show a restricted breed in DNA results even if it has similar features.
Socialize your pets!
The more comfortable your pet is around different kinds of people and in different situations, the better they’ll behave. Consider taking a basic obedience class to ensure your pet will not exhibit any negative behaviors that could prevent a landlord from renting to you and your family.
Temporary Boarding and Fostering
Do you need temporary boarding for your pet? Or would you like to re-home your pet to another family without having to bring your pet to a shelter? The Pet Housing Help AZ website is a peer-to-peer foster pet platform that offers both temporary and permanent rehoming for pets.
Pet Housing Help AZ allows pet owners to share information about their pets and request temporary fostering for their animals, and an opportunity for volunteers to review the cats and dogs that need a foster home and see if there is an opportunity to help a family in need!
Make a plan to pet-proof
Create a plan for dog- or cat-proofing the property and share your plans with the landlord to show you care about keeping the property nice and clean.
Look for private landlords
Look for private landlords (individuals who rent out a property they own) versus management companies; they may be more lenient on a pet policy.
