A few years ago, on Christmas Eve, Karena and her animals were unhoused and camped out at a cold Phoenix bus stop. She found herself in this situation after a series of events led her to become unhoused.
At the time, Karena was surviving on a fixed income of just $803 per month.
On permanent disability, she lives with a metal rod in her back from a past health condition and suffers PTSD from domestic violence. As if that isn’t enough to deal with, she also has cancer and is undergoing treatment.
When she suddenly lost her home in Winslow, her world crumbled.
Unwilling to surrender her beloved animals she vowed to care for, Karena and her animals traveled to Phoenix without a home, looking for shelter.
On Christmas Eve night, The Arizona Pet Project team heard of Karena’s plight, and our social worker rushed out to meet up with her.
Within 24 hours, our team helped Karena find a warm bed at a shelter, and we provided safe and comfortable temporary housing for her cats and dogs.
Thanks to supporters like YOU, Karena and her animals are living in their very own apartment and spending the holidays together in a warm bed instead of a cold bus stop.
When you support The Arizona Pet Project, you keep Arizona’s beloved pets and their families safe, happy, healthy, and, most importantly, together for the holidays!
Thank you for your compassion in supporting families and saving pets this holiday season! 🐾💙
