Brenda and Meeka

Dec 19, 2025

We have officially entered the cozy season. It’s the season of warm sweaters, holiday decorations, and wonderful gatherings with family, friends, and loved ones.

The holidays are also a time of great difficulty for many in our community – especially those who are facing financial difficulties, homelessness, medical challenges, or loneliness.

For many of these individuals, their pets are their greatest, and often only, source of comfort. While The Arizona Pet Project team always has people and pets who are struggling in our hearts, our compassion runs overtime during the holiday season, and we know yours does too. That’s why we take time to reflect on all those we’ve served over the past year, like Brenda and Meeka.

Meeka before

Meeka’s life began with mistreatment and neglect at a breeder. Thankfully, Brenda and her great aunt rescued Meeka and nourished her back to life. Brenda had not had a pet in her home since her kids moved out many years prior, but Brenda wanted to give Meeka another chance at a good life.

Brenda says that Meeka has “brightened my whole world.”

Meeka’s snaggled teeth are part of what made Brenda fall in love with Meeka, but it turned out those quirky teeth were causing Meeka health problems.

Brenda consulted a vet, who recommended an immediate dental extraction for Meeka. Hearing that Meeka’s cute teeth would need to be removed, Brenda was sad, but she knew it was for Meeka’s well-being.

Unfortunately, the cost of the extractions was simply too high for Brenda’s fixed income – Brenda is currently on disability and living on a very fixed budget. She wasn’t sure how she would be able to get Meeka the care she needed, and couldn’t stand the idea of her suffering.

Meeka

That’s when Brenda called The Arizona Pet Project. Brenda expressed deep commitment to Meeka’s well-being, stating she wanted to “give her a chance.”

Hearing their story, The Arizona Pet Project was thrilled to have the ability to schedule a veterinary appointment and fully cover the cost of Meeka’s dental procedure. When Brenda was informed that the procedure would be covered, she became very emotional.

Brenda was incredibly thankful for the support, and told us she was grateful that Meeka was finally “getting the care she needs.”

A month after the procedure. We followed up with Brenda, who shared that “Meeka is a whole different person and is very active.” Brenda noted that Meeka still has some of her teeth and that she is keeping up with Meeka’s dental hygiene to help prevent future issues.’

Brenda and Meeka are not alone. Over the last fiscal year, thanks to the generosity of incredible people like you, we supported over 1,000 pets with medical care, boarding, and housing assistance, provided an additional 2,046 pet families with supplies and resources, and connected thousands more to services through referrals. That makes you a hero to well over 4,000 pets last year!

Thanks to you, our team is in the community every day, working with families and helping them navigate the unique challenges they face as pet owners.

When you support The Arizona Pet Project, you extend a helping hand to a family in need, just like Brenda and Meeka.

Will you make your most generous gift today to support even more people and pets in crisis? Together, we can keep even MORE pets and families together. And together we can save even MORE lives.
